How to book storm and heat-wave work before the rush

A weather machine watches the National Weather Service feed every 15 minutes and asks your permission before it sends a thing. Here is the wiring and the math.

We hear a version of this story every week. A big blow comes through, and the roofer does what anybody would do, which is check his own house first. By the time he looks up, there are yard signs up in his neighborhoods, planted by a crew out of Orlando. Those are his roofs. His customers, his streets, his number in those kitchens.

He does not lose that work on price, and he does not lose it on craft. He loses it on hours. The other crew is not better. It is earlier.

Air conditioning shops lose the same week wearing different clothes. The first real scorcher lands, and the calls that come in are the ones that could have been on the schedule days earlier, on the shoulder days before the peak.

What the machine actually does

It is one weather machine with two modes, both riding the same free government weather feed. Roofers run storm mode. Air conditioning shops run heat mode. One mode is included per trade.

The watch runs around the clock and checks the National Weather Service feed every 15 minutes. Picture a light on in the back of the shop at 3 in the morning, reading the radar and waking nobody. That is the whole romance of it.

Storm triggers are gated to real threats: hurricane warnings, tropical storm warnings, and severe storms the weather service itself flags as destructive or carrying gusts of 70+ mph. Heat triggers use heat products rather than raw temperature: heat advisories, a heat index at 105+, the season's first three-day run of 92 to 93 degrees, long humidity stretches, and a slow-board detector for empty weeks. Those heat thresholds are backtested at setup against 2 to 3 years of local station history, so you know the activation count before you pay for a season.

When a threshold trips, you get one message asking you to reply Go. Reply, and your site flips into storm or heat mode and your opted-in book gets the booking email within the hour. Do not reply, and nothing goes out. Every send sits behind that one tap and under a hard quarterly cap. Emails carry the required footers. Texts go only to customers with logged written consent, and texting switches on in week 3, because carrier registration runs on the carriers' clock rather than ours.

Then comes the part that matters at 7 in the morning: a dispatch sheet sorted worst-first, tarp-now ahead of leak ahead of tune-up, clustered by street. After 72 hours the machine switches itself off and sweeps once to ask who still needs help. Roofer templates carry the storm-notice language Florida requires, with deductible and incentive wording blocked. The whole thing is armed within two weeks.

The honest math

Setup is $997. The monthly is $275. So year one, all in, is $997 plus 12 months at $275, which is $4,297. That is the number the machine has to beat.

Here is the roofer version, run on the numbers we quote. 2 warned wind events in a year. 6 inspections booked on each one. Close half. That is 3 repairs at $1,200 with a 45% margin, so $1,620 per storm, or $3,240 for the year. Add 1 storm-driven replacement at $12,000 with a 30% margin, which is $3,600. Total $6,840 against $4,297 all in.

That is 1.6x in year one and 2x after, once the setup fee is behind you. The heat math for air conditioning lands about the same. In the off-season the invoice buys a May list-scrub and consent refresh, a June save-our-number hurricane-prep campaign, and a mid-season fire drill. That is about 9 bucks a day for somebody watching the radar so you do not have to. If you would rather pay seasonally, we bill June to November at full rate and December to May at keep-warm, for the same annual total. A second mode adds $500 to setup and nothing to the monthly.

Who should not buy this

If your customer list is thin, heat mode is not for you yet. It wants 400 or more reachable customers. Under that, we would rather you wait.

If your book is not opted in, this is the wrong purchase. The machine mails your customers, not a bought list. No logged written consent, no texts. We would rather say that now than in week 3.

If you want it firing on every severe-thunderstorm warning, we are going to say no, and keep saying it. That is the setting that burns a good list down.

If you want the heat sends landing on the hottest day, this is built the other way on purpose. They fire on the forecast, 3 to 5 days out, so the schedule fills on the shoulder days and the peak days stay open for full-margin breakdown calls.

And if you will not answer the message asking for your Go, nothing happens. A send you do not approve simply never goes out.
